Option for Argentine citizenship

Argentine legislation provides that only people born within Argentine territory are Argentine citizens. People born outside the Argentine territory can obtain Argentine citizenship in two ways: option for Argentine citizenship or naturalization.

Only the children of Argentine native citizens born abroad can obtain Argentine citizenship through the option for Argentine citizenship.

The spouses of Argentine citizens and foreigners who have resided uninterruptedly for 2 years in Argentina can obtain Argentine citizenship through naturalization.

Obtaining Argentine citizenship through option for Argentine citizenship or naturalization does not bring about, for Argentine legislation, resignation or loss of any other citizenship.

These instructions relate to the option for Argentine citizenship. If you are looking for information about naturalization, see here.

The option for Argentine citizenship can be made both in Argentina before the Civil Registry or abroad before the Argentine Embassy or Consulate that has jurisdiction over the current place of residence of the applicant.

In any case, the option for Argentine citizenship requires the prior registration of the birth certificate of the applicant at the Argentine Embassy or Consulate that has jurisdiction over his/her place of birth.

- If you plan to make the option for Argentine citizenship in Argentina, remember to make this registration before starting the option procedure in our country. If the applicant was born in Sweden, you can check these instructions to register the birth certificate at this Embassy.

- If you decide to make the option for Argentine citizenship abroad and the applicant resides in Sweden, then the procedure must be conducted through this Embassy. In this case, the following should be noted:

* If the applicant was born in Sweden and currently resides in Sweden, the registration of the birth certificate will be made at the Embassy along with the option for the Argentine citizenship, in the same appointment.

* If the applicant resides in Sweden but was born in another country, before requesting an appointment to opt for Argentine citizenship at this Embassy, he/she must first register the birth certificate at the Argentine Embassy or Consulate that has jurisdiction over the place of birth. If you can't travel to your place of birth, require the assistance of the Argentine Embassy in Sweden by writing to consulares_esuec@mrecic.gov.ar.

After completing the option for Argentine citizenship in the Embassy, an Argentine DNI will be issued for the applicant, which will be sent by post to the Embassy.

If the applicant is under 14 years old, he/she will be also able to apply for a new Argentine biometric Passport or an Emergency Passport.

If the applicant is over or has 14 years old, he/she will be able to apply for the Argentine passport only after receiving his/her first Argentine DNI.

The applicant under 18 years old can only make an option for the Argentine citizenship accompanied by both parents. The applicant over 18 years old can conduct the procedure by him/herself, without the parents consent.
