Argentine Nationality can be acquired by persons born outside Argentine territory in two ways: by option or by naturalization. Nationality by option is available exclusively for children of native Argentine citizens born abroad.
General Aspects
-
Only children of native Argentine citizens born abroad may obtain Argentine nationality by option at the consulate.
-
Obtaining nationality either by option or naturalization does not imply, under Argentine law, renunciation or loss of any other nationality.
-
The nationality option can be exercised either in Argentina before the Civil Registry or abroad before the Argentine Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over the applicant’s current place of residence. If carried out in Argentina, remember to bring the apostilled PERSONBEVIS, which must be translated in Argentina. The Consulate does not translate or legalize document translations. To be valid in Argentina, translations must be done by a sworn public translator registered in the country and certified by the corresponding translators’ association.
-
If currently residing in Sweden but the applicant was born in another country, before requesting an appointment to opt for Argentine nationality in this jurisdiction, you must first verify the validity of the birth certificate at the Argentine Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over the place of birth. A personbevis is not valid if you were NOT born in Sweden.
|ATTENTION: ONLY ONE NATIONALITY IS PROCESSED PER DAY|
Fees:
-
Registration of the applicant’s birth in the Civil Registry Book: amount in SEK equivalent to USD 40 (USD 40 for every 25 lines).

-

-

The exact amount in SEK will be informed at the consular appointment.
Required Documentation
(Originals must be submitted, except for identity documents)
1 | PERSONBEVIS WITH ALL RELATIONS (if birth took place in Sweden): Birth certificate (personbevis) of the applicant issued by local authorities (Skatteverket), signed and stamped by an official of said body, and subsequently legalized by a public notary with an apostille from The Hague. Ensure that the personbevis is the long version that includes both parents.
-
The personbevis must list only the details of the child (or adult) and parents, and must be issued no more than 6 months before submission. This personbevis is identified in Swedish as utdrag om folkbokföringsuppgifter 120 med alla relationer.
-
Additionally, the personbevis must include as a complementary detail the mention of the applicant’s date of birth (e.g., “Juan Pérez är född 10 juni 2002”). This must be expressly requested from Skatteverket. The correct term for requesting this complementary addition is MANUELL KOMPLETTERING. Skatteverket then includes this information on the last page of the personbevis. See example of how the last page of the personbevis must appear HERE.
If birth took place in another country: Either a certificate of birth registration issued by the Argentine Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over the place of birth, or an apostilled birth certificate, which will be verified by the consulate responsible for the registration.
2 | TRANSLATION INTO SPANISH OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE (personbevis): Carried out by a sworn translator. Apostille of the translation is not required. If you do not know any sworn Swedish–Spanish translator, contact Kammarkollegiet (Board of Authorized Translators).
3 | CERTIFIED BIRTH CERTIFICATE OF THE ARGENTINE-BORN PARENT: One certificate if both parents are Argentine. Must be issued within the last 6 months. If the certificate is digital and legalized through the GEDO system, it does not expire for this procedure.
4 | IDENTITY DOCUMENTS:
-
If the applicant is under 18 years old: The nationality option can only be made in the presence of both parents. If only one parent attends because the other has passed away, proof of death must also be presented.
-
If death occurred in Argentina: certified death certificate.
-
If in Sweden: personbevis of the deceased parent, legalized with apostille and accompanied by an official Spanish translation.
-
If in another country: certificate of registration of death issued by that country and legalized by the Argentine Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction.
-
-
If the applicant is 18 or older: Own passport with at least 1 year of validity, plus a copy of the Argentine parent’s DNI.
5 | PHOTOGRAPH: One color photo, 4 cm x 4 cm, front view, perfectly white background, no glasses or hats, for the Registry of Enrollments.
