The Argentine Embassy to the Kingdom of Sweden broadcasted the documentary “Estación Agujero Azul”, by director Santiago Otheguy, with the collaboration of the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas de Argentina (CONICET).
The screening of this documentary took place in the framework of the Ibero-American Cultures Festival organized by the Cervantes Institute in Stockholm.
We appreciate the participation of all those who attended the event and especially to the Cervantes Institute for its collaboration.
In addition, we take the opportunity to share that the Argentine Republic was selected as the headquarters of a new UNESCO Specialized Center for Ocean Sciences within the framework of the OTGA (Ocean Teacher Global Academy) program of the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
The center will be dedicated to the development of capacities and training in ocean science in the countries of the region with a view to assisting the States to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development of the UN.
The Argentine proposal was elaborated jointly by the Foreign Ministry, the Naval Hydrography Service (SHN) -dependent of the Ministry of Defense-, the School of Marine Sciences of the Argentine Navy (ESCM) and the Department of Sciences of the Atmosphere and the Oceans of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).
In this regard, Foreign Minister Felipe Solá highlighted "Argentina's commitment to research and science for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans", which is reflected in the active work of the Foreign Ministry in international fora related to oceans, the law of the sea and fisheries issues.
Daniela Castro, Secretary of Research, Industrial Policy and Production for Defense in the Ministry of Defense, considered that the new Specialized Center for Ocean Sciences "will be a framework for strengthening and exchanging knowledge, it implies that Argentina will have an outstanding role in the region for the next Decade of Ocean Sciences which means strengthening capacities in an special context thinking about the relaunching of the Pampa Azul initiative”.
The new Specialized Center joins the worldwide network of OTGA centers of IOC-UNESCO and will serve to enhance Argentina's activities in the area of conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, contributing to the implementation of the Objectives of the Decade of the United Nations Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development beginning in 2021, as well as Sustainable Development Goal 14 (“Conservation and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources”) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
